Giving Back to the Community

"Education is not only about classrooms; it is about creating an environment where every child believes they matter."

On 21 October 2025, something extraordinary happened at Migrants Farmers' Primary School in Osu Offi Eyede, Okobo Local Government Area.

For many years, pupils attended classes under challenging conditions. Some learned while sitting on bare floors, an everyday reality that made learning more difficult than it should have been.

Then hope arrived.

The Oron Development Union (ODU) UK & Ireland, under the leadership of Chief Lady Atai Tina Bassey, donated over 100 dual-seated desks and writing materials, transforming the school's learning environment and restoring dignity to the classroom.

To many, they were just desks.

To those children, they represented opportunity.

More Than Furniture

A desk is more than wood and metal.

It gives a child a place to write, to dream, to ask questions, and to discover their potential. It sends a powerful message: your education matters.

The school's head teacher described the donation as the first act of generosity of its kind since the school was established. That statement alone reminds us how profoundly one thoughtful intervention can change the experience of an entire generation of learners.

Investing in the Next Generation

Communities are strengthened when they invest in their children.

By providing learning materials and proper classroom furniture, ODU UK & Ireland demonstrated that education remains one of the greatest investments any society can make. Every desk placed in that classroom represents a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in dignity.

During the presentation, Engr. Edet Eyo, International President of the Oro Youth Movement (OYOM), encouraged the pupils to remain disciplined, value their education, and strive for excellence. He reminded them that with determination and hard work, they too could grow into men and women who would one day give back to their communities.

His message reflected an important truth: today's learners are tomorrow's leaders.

Community Development Is a Shared Responsibility

While expressing heartfelt appreciation, the school's leadership also appealed for chairs and tables for teachers, highlighting that there is still more work to be done.

Their request serves as a reminder that community development is not the responsibility of governments alone. It requires individuals, organisations, and communities working together to create lasting solutions.

Every contribution matters.

Every act of kindness creates new possibilities.

Every investment in education helps build a stronger society.

The Legacy of Giving

  • The story of Migrants Farmers' Primary School is about much more than donated desks.
  • It is about restoring hope where there was discouragement.
  • It is about replacing limitations with opportunity.
  • It is about demonstrating that true leadership is measured not by titles or recognition, but by the lives we improve.
The Oron Development Union UK & Ireland has shown that when communities choose to invest in education, they invest in a future that benefits everyone.

Because sometimes, changing the world does not begin with extraordinary wealth or influence.

Sometimes, it begins with something as simple as giving a child a desk.

And from that desk, dreams take flight.
