The Importance of Self-Care While Supporting Family

There is a common belief, especially in many African families and communities, that being responsible means sacrificing everything for the people you love. While supporting family is admirable and often necessary, there is a dangerous line between helping others and completely neglecting yourself.
Recently, I had a conversation with a young woman I have been
mentoring. She shared a burden that many people quietly carry every day.
Almost her entire salary was spent solving family problems. Every
month, there was a new emergency, another bill to pay, another relative to
support, or another responsibility that somehow landed on her shoulders. She
had become the family's financial lifeline.
As she spoke, I listened carefully and then asked her a simple
question:
"When was the last time you bought something for
yourself?"
She paused.
No answer.
I asked another question.
"When was the last time you did something special for
yourself? Something that made you happy?"
Again, silence.
It became
clear that in her quest to take care of everyone else, she had completely
forgotten herself.
Then I asked a
question that changed the entire conversation.
"Do you
realise that if anything were to happen to you today, the same people you
believe cannot survive without you would eventually move on and continue with
their lives?"
The moment
those words sank in, she broke down in tears.
Then I asked a question that changed the entire conversation.
"Do you realise that if anything were to happen to you today,
the same people you believe cannot survive without you would eventually move on
and continue with their lives?"
The moment
those words sank in, she broke down in tears.
It was not
because she did not love her family. It was because she suddenly realised how
much of herself she had given away without preserving anything for her own
wellbeing, future, or happiness.
The younger sister she was sacrificing so much for appeared healthier, happier, more confident, and more radiant than she did.
"If a
man met both you and your sister today, who do you think he would be more
likely to approach?"
The question
was not about appearance or competition. It was meant to help her see how much
she had neglected her own physical, emotional, and personal development while
carrying everyone's burdens.
But this time, those tears carried a powerful lesson.
- The Hidden Cost of Constant Sacrifice
- Many people spend years believing their worth is measured by how much they can give.
- They pay everyone's bills but neglect their own health.
- They support everyone's dreams but abandon their own ambitions.
- They provide emotional support to everyone around them while silently battling exhaustion, anxiety, and burnout.
- Over time, they become physically drained, emotionally empty, and financially vulnerable.
The sad
reality is that people often become so accustomed to receiving your help that
they stop noticing the sacrifices you are making.
Think of the safety instructions given on an airplane. In the event of an emergency, adults are instructed to put on their own oxygen masks before helping others.
- Because you cannot save anyone if you lose consciousness first.
- The same principle applies in life.
- You cannot effectively support your family if you are financially broken.
- You cannot encourage others if you are emotionally exhausted.
- You cannot build others up while your own life is falling apart.
The problem
begins when those sacrifices become so extreme that they threaten your
wellbeing, your goals, your health, and your future.
- Healthy support includes healthy boundaries.
- It means helping where you can without destroying yourself in the process.
- It means creating room for your own growth while still being there for the people you love.
- It means understanding that your dreams matter too.
Lessons We Can All Learn:
1. Your Wellbeing
Matters
You deserve
rest, happiness, growth, and fulfilment just as much as anyone else.
2. Financial
Responsibility Requires Balance
Supporting
family is important, but so is saving, investing, and planning for your own
future.
3. Self-Care
Is Not Selfish
Looking after
your mental, physical, and emotional health enables you to show up better for
others.
4. Set
Healthy Boundaries
Not every
problem is yours to solve. Learning to say "no" when necessary is a
sign of wisdom, not selfishness.
5. Invest in
Yourself
Education,
personal development, health, appearance, and career growth are investments
that will benefit both you and those you care about.
Final Thoughts:
The desire to
help others is one of humanity's most beautiful qualities. However, we must remember
that our lives have value too.
You are not
just a provider.
You are not
just a problem-solver.
You are not
just a source of support for everyone around you.
You are a
person with dreams, needs, aspirations, and a future worth protecting.
Take care of
yourself.
Invest in
yourself.
Celebrate
yourself.
Because when
you are healthy, fulfilled, and thriving, you are in a much stronger position
to help others.
Remember
this: You should never have to set
yourself on fire just to keep everyone else warm.
